Stephen Watt![]() Poetry Rivals 2010 Over 18 slam champion! We are delighted to announce Stephen Watt as the 2010 Over 18s winner. His thought provoking poem landed him a publishing contract with Bonacia Ltd, We can't wait to see more of his work. What inspired your winning poem 'Rubik'? A close friend was getting married and had asked if I would write/read something at the service. I declined this offer at the time, but had written this around that time with the 'marriage proposal' idea in mind. What inspired entry to Poetry Rivals? I have been writing for 11 years, and only been performing on stage for 6 months. When I entered the competition, the big draw for me was to get up on stage and try it out - I had never performed live at this point. What are your thoughts on the Slam? I thought it was a very eclectic and intelligent array of characters, prose, and language but all shared the same hint of fear when it came to our turn. The established acts/judges were incredibly entertaining and inspiring. How did you feel when you had won the Poetry Rivals Slam? Well I swore when I heard my name, and felt enormous disbelief due to the excellent competition. However, the warmth shown directly after the event from all the other poetry, the Bonacia team, judges, etc blew my mind, and the 50+ text messages/phone calls from back home in Scotland contributed to one of the best weekends of my life. Any other comments? All I'd like to add is that I feel greatly influenced by punk poet John Cooper Clarke's performances, and words + imagery of female writers such Carol Ann Duffy and Angela Redman, which is helping me find my own flair and rhythm - but I still feel like a bit of a con that people seem to think anything I write is genuinely worth anything, but will continue to do so as long as folk enjoy story-telling, and the situations which I create through my poetry. Rubik I wish to solve you. Make it my life's mission. I think in squares. Everything must be parallel. Can I split you? Turn you into universes and orbits. Stephen Watt Pre-order Now!
